Corporate Welfare: Where’s the Outrage?
August 3, 10 am - Noon

A successful economy benefits  just about everyone.  So policymakers are rightly concerned about the competitiveness of American business – especially in a global economy.  This concern has led to government subsidies and assistance – sometimes for the biggest companies in the world.  But does this allow politicians to choose the economic winners and losers?  And is this a good idea?  Corporations spend millions to lobby the government for support, but who lobbies for the taxpayer?

It’s almost impossible to come up with an accurate cost of corporate welfare in the United States.  Forbes magazine estimates that the Fortune 500 corporations alone account for $63 billion in subsidies.  Think about that: some of the largest companies in the world are increasing their bottom line with tax payer dollars.  Why are we not protesting in the streets?  Where’s the outrage?

This Summinar begins with the showing of the one hour public television documentary, “Corporate Welfare: Where’s the Outrage” and continues with a discussion of the stories told and the issues raised in the areas of agriculture, urban renewal, tax incentives for big business and banking.
