Part I - July 11, 10 am - Noon
Part II - July 25, 10 am - Noon

What do you want to know but haven’t asked?

What do you want to say that you haven’t said?

Who do you want to thank?

What do you not want to regret?

Questions like these are at the heart of great conversations. Conversations with family and friends. Conversations that matter. Conversations that we want to have on a “someday” that never seems to come.

Well, this Summinar is about making “someday” into “this summer.” Having, recording, preserving, and sharing meaningful conversations is what “StoryCorps in Leelanau” is all about.

The good news: You already have all the tools you’ll need. In this Summinar, we’ll learn how to use them, and in the best way.

The better news: You’ll have a chance to share what you’ve done.

“StoryCorps in Leelanau” will include 2 sessions. In the first session, we’ll learn some of the essentials: how to use the StoryCorps smartphone app for recording; other recording methods; the kinds of questions that will get a good conversation started; and what to do with the recording you’ve made. The session will then turn hands-on, with a short practice session. You’ll leave knowing what to do, and how to do it.

In the second session, two weeks after the first, we’ll check in on our progress, share any recordings we’ve done as well as the experiences we’ve gained — and, if you’ve been inspired by this idea, begin creating a collaborative project we can share with the rest of the community: a portrait of our Leelanau summer of 2022, to be produced in collaboration with the Leelanau Museum.

If you know about StoryCorps, you’ve probably heard conversations they’ve shared weekly through National Public Radio, where you can hear in action their mission to build connections between people to create a more just and compassionate world. “StoryCorps in Leelanau” is a way we can, together, create such a world, beginning right here at home.

DANIEL STEWART is a writer, writing coach, storyteller and radio producer. He writes memoir and fiction (and tries to keep them from overlapping). He studied at Hampshire College and the Salt Center for Documentary Studies, received a PhD in History from Temple University, trained as a StoryCorps facilitator, and is a past president of Michigan Writers, Inc. He lives on an old farmstead in Leelanau County with his wife and a number of animals, some of them invited.

Note: The two StoryCorps Summinars are registered as a single ticket which is good for both sessions on July 11 and July 25.
