Be Careful What You Say About So And So: The Locals
July 8, 10 am - Noon

No one living in Leland knows the history of the town better than the brothers Bill and Mark Carlson. They are fourth generation “locals.” Their great grandfather, Nels Carlson settled on North Manitou Island sometime in the 1870.s. There the family farmed and fished for a living. They moved ashore to Leland in 1903 making a harrowing crossing over the ice. Here their offspring lived, worked and intermarried within the small community. Many of the names of those early residents survive to this day. So do some of the early friendships as well as the remains of some old family kerfuffles. Yes, there were rivalries but if an outsider tried to raise hell with a local, the town came together as one in defense. Today, wise folks in Leland have found it best to say nothing negative about any old-time resident, because word will spread to an endless list of related family members. They may have different last names but they are related. Bill and Mark will unravel the mysteries of who is related to whom as well as regaling us with an endless supply of historic (sometimes hysterical) anecdotes; Scott Craig will moderate this attempt to unearth some intriguing Leland history.
